Fatwa # 100 from UK Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Assalamu alaikum,
I am in the process of getting a divorce. I loved to the city when I got married and only my sister and her husband live here. My parents are back in the city where I grew up. I am currently completing studies whilst staying at my sisters house. I have a fantastic job and if I go back to my parents I would not be able to continue with this or find another job. I want to re-start building a life for myself and for me the main thing that will help me is my job. I was wondering, islamically would it be halal for me to buy and live in my own accomodation (near my sisters house so that I was near family and I would go back to visit my family regularly) as a single muslimah, at least for a year while I get the experience I need for my career. Also I would be near islamic organisations so that I could cotinue to develop my islamic knowledge and charecter. My exhusband has destroyed everything else in my life, surely I should be allowed to maintain this one thing that I have for myself? Would this be okay if my parents agreed to it? Or would I have to go back to live with my parents?
I hope to receive a reply from you shortly.
Wa Alaykum Assalaam

If it is safe, there is nothing wrong with it. Though living with others is certainly superior. It is better to live close to your sister for obvious reasons. If you are buying a house without getting involved in interest (riba), then it is fine by all means. otherwise, it is haraam to have conventional mortgage according to majority of ulama. As long as you observe the dress and social interaction code with people, there is nothing wrong with pursuing your career, albeit your main focus should be home and raising children as a primary responsibility.

and Allaah knows best.
