Fatwa # 93 from england Sunday, February 14, 2010
Slaam
Imam i would like to know that if I read the Quraan in English will i get the same reward if i read the Quraan in Arabic as I understand english.then I know what I am reading I feel that the whole point of reading the Quraan is to undrstand it? thanyou please reply as iam very confused.
wa alaykum assalaam

Reading Qur?anic translation is very beneficial to connect to Allaah. However the recitation in Arabic brings about a lot of blessings and reward even without understanding its meaning, for these are the Words of Allah, and their aural majesty makes hearts submit reverentially.

The hadith explains that each letter of Qur?an brings about ten rewards. So saying alif laam meem ? will accrue thirty rewards. You won?t get this reward with translation alone. Although there are many benefits of reading translation and one must not ignore this. However one should recite in Arabic first, and when possible spend time in translation ? not other way around.

Hope this clarifies the issue.
