Fatwa # 118 from England |

Assalamu-alaikum, I am in real turmoil over whether I should have another baby. I have 2 boys aged 12 and 5. In both instances the pain of childbirth and the struggle of the first year has really affected me psychologically, so much so that I feel I can't cope with another child. I don't know what to do and would very much like an islamic perspective on this. Above all, I don't want to go against Allah's wishes. |

Wa alaykum Assalaam
There is no compulsion in Islam to have more babies, although it is preferable to have more. The temporary methods of contraception are allowed as long as it is mutually agreed between husband and wife. Permanent contraception is not allowed unless there is serious threat to mother on medical grounds. It is also not allowed to use contraception for the fear of poverty. It must not be imposed by the government for financial reasons.
In summary, there is no sin on you if you don?t want to have more children provided your husband is in agreement with it.
