The Syrian refugee crisis is truly one of the most heartbreaking humanitarian emergencies ever to exist, and this damage has been spreading ever since 2011. In these last 12 years, millions of Syrians have had no choice but to flee their homes and seek refuge and safety in neighbouring countries. Despite the length of time that the Syrian refugee crisis has been happening, it’s still far from over. As a result, it’s still of the utmost importance that we join together as a community to offer our support.
The humanitarian crisis in Syria is continuing to affect refugees in a number of debilitating ways. Although they have been displaced for over a decade, they’re still struggling to establish a sense of stability and rebuild their lives.
The hardships for Syrian refugees are unimaginable. They have been forced to leave their homes, communities, and even their family members, leaving them in a state of loneliness and grief. This is in addition to the violence, loss, and trauma that many have been subjected to, which will haunt them for a lifetime.
Restricted access to healthcare and clean water, limited food, and overcrowding are just some of the many conditions that refugees are subjected to in camps. Similarly, the education of children is almost always disrupted, leaving them unable to break out of the vicious cycle of poverty.
As previously mentioned, refugees don’t typically have ready access to healthcare, leaving them vulnerable to preventable illnesses. This became even more apparent in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic when already struggling healthcare systems were put under further strain, and more lives were lost.
It has been formerly touched on how the education of refugee children is often disrupted; however, this runs much deeper than it may initially seem, with a considerable number of children being out of school for years. From this, future prospects are erased, and the long-term development of Syria is stunted.
Since it’s such a struggle to find employment as a refugee, the vast majority of refugees are left in economic hardship. They have no choice but to rely on a charity for refugees, but these organisations are already overwhelmed.
Although it may seem as though the Syrian refugee crisis is too big of an issue to tackle, there are many small steps that can be taken to make a positive impact on those in need.
First and foremost, one of the most valuable things you can do for Syrian refugees is educate yourself and others about the ongoing crisis. From this, you’ll be able to raise awareness and encourage empathy. This awareness can come in the form of social media posts, online blogs, or even just conversations with friends.
There are multiple policies that can be implemented to support refugees, and you can get in touch with your local representatives to help bring these to life. Increased humanitarian aid funding, refugee resettlement, and fair asylum procedures are just some of the initiatives that can be implemented.
Various companies produce items that are made by refugees or support refugee causes, and purchasing these can make a world of difference to those in need. This way, you’ll be contributing to sustainable livelihoods for displaced individuals.
Perhaps most importantly, you should never forget that Syrian refugees are people who have been subjected to immense hardship. This means you should approach the issue with respect and empathy in order to understand their unique experiences.
Here at UKIM, we have established our Syrian Refugee Appeal. We use your donations to alleviate the struggles of Syrian refugees and make their lives that little bit more bearable.
As well as donations, UKIM accepts UK volunteers, and we have a large network across the entire country. If you’d like to take the hands-on approach to helping Syrian refugees, we invite you to sign up.
UKIM has a number of sponsorship programmes available, allowing you to deliver regular funds to families in need. For instance, you can sponsor an orphaned family for one year to provide a shade of care to families who have lost the breadwinner.
Here at UKIM, we don’t underestimate the importance of education, which is why we’ve established our Educate a Child Appeal to help children break away from the vicious cycle of poverty.
Regardless of which mode of support you opt for, UKIM can help you to help Syrian refugees. Let’s join together to make the world a better place for Syrian refugees.
