Over 200 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces this year, according to UN Middle East. This surpasses the deaths of Palestinians from the previous year, and unfortunately, the number of deaths is still increasing.

The Current Situation in Gaza

People in Gaza have been severely affected by Israeli forces. Palestinians, including widows and children, have been displaced, restricted, and attacked by Israeli soldiers.

They live in grief at the death of loved ones and fear what might happen at any moment.

In recent news, Israel closed the Erez border crossing, the only civilian route between Israel and the Gaza Strip. This has prevented thousands of Palestinians from working and hence putting their jobs at risk.

The crossing has been kept closed since Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year holiday) due to protests, but this is just another way in which Israelis are oppressing and controlling the lives of Palestinians.

A History of Oppression and the Nakba

Palestinians have been oppressed and had their lives dictated by the Israeli forces ever since 1947, when 700,000 Palestinians were forced out of their homes and villages were destroyed. This was known as the Nakba, where Palestinians faced extreme persecution.

Over the years, Palestinians have been evicted from their rightful homes, restricted from work, had limited to no healthcare, and have been attacked and killed on the streets.

In many cases, Palestinians and Palestinian refugees have been denied healthcare and work because of their refugee status or other political reasons.

The effects of the Nakba are still faced by Palestinian refugees who fled to places including Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan to escape persecution.

Continued Oppression

The oppression continues today. Towards the end of 2020, the Israeli magistrate court disregarded the human rights of Palestinians when it allowed Israeli settlers to take over Palestinians’ homes and leave them displaced and homeless. This was a huge breach of human rights.

In addition, in recent months, several Palestinians have been murdered or detained, and they nor their families have any justice.

Denied Access to Healthcare

Access to healthcare is also an issue for Palestinians in Gaza. In 2023, there was an increase in violence and, hence, demand for medical care in the form of paramedics, health workers, ambulances, and medical centres/hospitals. A lot of the time, the reason they need this medical attention is due to attacks and injuries sustained from Israeli soldiers. However, often, it is doctors and nurses who are attacked with the Israeli's intention of making them unable to help others.

According to WHO, there were 750 health attacks documented from 2019 to 2022. These attacks have been shown in WHO reports as having killed a health worker, 568 health workers being injured, and 315 ambulances having been affected.

How You Can Help

You can help Palestinians by donating to our Gaza Emergency Appeal. Your donations towards this appeal have the power to help so many people. You can help to provide food, hygiene kits, medical care and much more for struggling families.

£50 can provide a family food pack to feed a family for a month. It includes essentials like rice and flour.

£200 can provide 200 people with cooked meals, SubhanAllah.

£500 can provide medical aid to Palestine for hospitals to ensure medical care is given to those who need it. This is especially important given the attacks on healthcare workers.

£2,000 can build and repair homes for Palestinians in Gaza. Shelter and safety are often blessings we take for granted but are so important and are a basic human right.

Remember, many of these people are displaced with little or no belongings, so any help is greatly appreciated by them.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in a hadith: “You will not believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.” “The believers are like one body in their mutual love and affection: if one limb is injured, the rest responds with sleeplessness and fever.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also said: “Charity does not in any way decrease the wealth and the servant who forgives, Allah adds to his respect; and the one who shows humility, Allah elevates him in the estimation (of the people).” (Muslim)

In another hadith, he said: "When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased)." (Muslim)

We should take his teachings and implement them as best we can, and one way to do this is by giving charity. Please donate to Palestine generously to have a big impact on the lives of our brothers and sisters. Most importantly, please remember them in your duas.

May it weigh heavy on our scales. Ameen.
